It is a hard mineral scoring 7.5 on the Mohs scale. Black tourmaline deposits are found on all continents. In France, deposits are located in the Monts du Lyonnais, the Massif Central, the Massif des Maures, the Vosges, the Armorican Massif, and the Pyrenees.

In Sri Lanka, the land of origin of this stone, it is said that tourmaline has fallen from the sky and crossed a rainbow which gave it these different variations of colour. For this reason, it is called “tourmaline” which means “stone of a thousand colours”. Although there are a few references to tourmaline in stories dating back to the 2^nd century BC, this stone has long remained unknown because of its variety of colours. There was no precise name, only descriptions of its pyroelectric properties. For example, an ancient philosopher (-322 to -288) spoke of a black stone that “attracts straws and pieces of wood”. With this confusion of colour, many jewellery pieces such as those of the British crown were made from tourmaline which was thought to be rubies. It was not until the 19^th century that tourmaline was properly identified.
